~~~ Chapter Two Part One: The Twins ~~~
I made it to the edge of town a little before midday. The journey took longer because I had to stop a few times because I wasn't used to riding a horse.
I noticed an Inn with a stable and decided to stop there and rest for a while, so I dismounted Sahara and started walking. I adjusted my Vieran ears so they were hidden by my hair. I had to look normal and since I didn't know what awaited me I might as well hid my ears. My walk was a little unorthodox because I had been riding for so long.
As I walked towards the Inn, a woman approached me.
"Do you wish to stay here? If so, we have a pasture for you to put your horse. Our Inn is open to all travelers." -She looked like she was about the same age as me.
"If that isn't a problem. I need a place to stay and I think here will do."
"Let me lead your horse to the pasture. After I get your horse settled I will come and help you with whatever adjustments you need." -she reached out for Sahara's reins and I hesitated for a moment.
"If you want, I can show you where your horse will be staying." -she decided that instead of taking Sahara's reins she would have me lead her to the stable after she noticed my hesitation to pass the reins to someone else.
I followed her while she led me closer to the pasture.
"Your mare is beautiful. Almost like the ones from the palace." -at the mention of the palace I froze. I could not believe that I just left everything behind. Why? Why did I decide to leave? I couldn't remember but for whatever reason I had to pretend that I was just a normal traveler.
"Are you okay?" -she looked at me with concern.
"Did I say something wrong?"
"No. I'm sorry. I'm just a little weary from traveling." -that was a good lie, wasn't it? Why do I have all of the doubts? I know, I'll change the subject to a safer topic.
"What is your name?" -She looked a little shocked at the change in subject, but she decided that it was best not to question a guest.
"My name is Lyrica, Lyrica Lukesz-Hess. My sister, Fayla Lukesz-Hess, is inside. She will help take care of you during your stay here."
"If I may ask, how old are you and your sister and are you guys the only ones who run this Inn?"
"Both are common questions around here. Fayla and I are both 19. This Inn was our parents but they died while serving in the war, so it became our Inn. We try to run it how our parents did."
"I am sorry to hear that your parents passed. That must be hard. Wait. You and Fayla are the same age, so then you must be twins, right?" -curiosity can be a bad thing but I didn't want to make her sad by making her think about her parents.
"Yes. Fayla and I are twins. We were born 7 minutes apart and ended up being born on different days. She was born really late one night and 7 minutes later I was born, which happened to be in the morning of the next day. Anyways, let's get you settled in so you can rest for a bit." -I removed the saddle bag from Sahara and then unbridled her and let her loose in the pasture.
"Do you want me to carry your bag?" -I was not ready to share my secrets about where I was from and why I had left.
"No, I've got it. How much does it cost to spend the night here anyways?" -I was hoping that it wasn't a whole lot because I needed to get some actual adventurer so that way I can look the part, even if I still couldn't really play the part.
"We get enough travelers that we only have to charge 10 copper a night." -copper? COPPER? I have never seen copper before. I know that gold is worth more, but I never thought that I would need to use copper if I had enough gold and silver. Suddenly an idea hit me.
"Well, as an adventurer I hardly have use for copper but I'm sure a few silver coins will be worthy." -I didn't know how much weapons and armor costed but I had to attempt something to not blow my cover.
"Silver coins? One-hundred copper coins equals ONE silver coin. That would be over paying."
"I know but I'll be staying for a few days so that can pay for them and the rest you can use to help keep your Inn nice and tidy."
"Are you sure about this? That is a lot of money." -as we walked into the Inn I say a girl who looked exactly like Lyrica. The only difference was their clothes.
"Fay, we have a new guest."
"What is your name?" -Fayla's eyes were set and focused on guarding.
"My name is Pri- I mean my name is Kaden." -I almost blew my cover. That was way to close.
"Welcome to the Lucky Dog Inn. As I'm sure my sister has already informed you, this is our Inn and our rooms are always open for travelers. If you need assistance with anything just come and find either Lyrica or myself. My name is Fayla but you can call me Fay."
"It truly is an honor to meet such kind people. Here. This should cover my stay here." -I handed her three silver coins.
"Kaden, how long do you intend on staying this is enough to stay for thirty nights. We have never had anyone stay that long at one time."
"Lyrica informed me about how much it was to stay a night and I decided that I would donate some extra to help you guys." -her eyes turned towards Lyrica and her tone of voice changed into a threatening one.
"I told you, we do NOT accept handouts. Not now and not ever. We will do just fine without."
"She tried to convince me to pay the normal price but I insisted that I would pay extra. This isn't a hand out, it is a gift." -I had to cover for Lyrica because she was so kind to offer me a place to stay.
"I'm not sure what you're planning but don't get Lyrica mixed up with it."
"Don't worry Fay, I learned my lesson from that other traveler. I won't get involved in the ways of travelers. Now, let's be nice to our guest and I'll show her to her room."
"NO! I'm going to show her to her room. It is your shift behind the counter after all."
"I guess you are right, but please be nice. She was only being kind."
I couldn't read their expressions but they seemed to have a whole conversation before Fayla looked at me.
"Come on Kaden, your room is up these stairs. Just follow me." -she led me up one flight of stairs and then went towards the back of the hallway.
"This here is your room. And this...(she handed me a key)...is the key to your room. That way you don't need either of us to gain access to your room. I hope you enjoy your stay here. If your travels have a need of assistance talk to me. Lyrica seems to have a problem with getting her nose into places that is doesn't belong, and it ends up getting her hurt. If you need food or anything else just come and find me. I'll be in the tavern part of the Inn. And ...*sigh*... Thank you. For the money. I just don't want to owe anyone favors that I can't repay."
"Don't worry. You and your sister are helping me more than you probably ever know." -I walked into the rather large room that had a few other doors that led elsewhere.
"Oh, and one last thing. Who are you and how did you get that much money. That would be about 3 week's worth of saving for just those three silver coins and yet you seem willing to give them away."
"If I told you about me then you would be endangering your life as well as your sister's. I'll be on my way in no more than two days. I just need to get somethings and rest, then I'll be on my way." -the honesty in that hurt a little. I would not be able to make friends without endangering them because I am the runaway princess.
"I didn't mean to scare you into leaving early. I was just trying to look out for my only family member left. The Mars Imperial Army (M.I.A)  murdered our parents. I wish I could talk to our King and convince him that words will not stop them from destroying our land and our home. They will come and try to kill us all."
"I tried. He didn't listen." -crap! That was suppose to stay in my head, now I have a bit of explaining to do.
"Wait! You mean that you have meet the King? Please tell me. I need to know what is going on within the palace." -her protected looked dissipated and her eyes were suddenly full of curiosity.
"I already said to much. If I end up endangering you or your sister I will never forgive myself. You guys have been nothing but....well you've been a little mean, but Lyrica has been kind to me."
"Look, I need to know why the King thinks that talking will end this war. He is foolish to think so."
"Fine I will tell you about it but you have to find a safe place away from here where I can tell you. That is the only way I will tell you."
"I'll find a scout. Do you need anything?"
"I need to find some appropriate clothing for adventuring. Then I am ready."
"I'll send you into town with Lyrica, there you can gather whatever supplies you need. I will go find a scout and with his help I will find a safe place to discus more. LYRICA! Come here please!" -she hollered for Lyrica and not long after Lyrica was in the doorway with a quizzical expression fixed on her sister.
"Kaden wants to go into town for some supplies, will you take her and guide her around?"
"Sure! You had me worried for a few moments there. I thought that you and her might have gotten into a fight or something."
"I know better than to mess with adventurers." -with that Fayla disappeared from the doorway after trading places with Lyrica.
Lyrica took me to the town and led me around to the best armor and weapon shops. She pointed out things that she thought would look good on me and she helped decide what I ended up with.
After a few hours of this Fayla managed to find us.
"Are you ready to head out Kaden?"
"Yes. I am ready to head out with you."
"Where are you both headed off too? And without ME?"
"I'm sorry Lyrica but Kaden and I have some things to figure out. We need someone to run the Inn, don't we?"
"Fine. But I want to know what's going on."
"Later, for now Kaden and I have to leave. See you later Lyrica. Keep the Inn safe."
"I will." -with that Fayla headed towards the Inn and got her horse ready to ride. I called Sahara's name and she came to me. I was quick to bridle her, place the saddle bag on her back, and mount.
Just before we were about to leave I saw a few of the Palace guards headed our way.
"Let's get moving! Where are we headed to?" -Fayla could obviously tell that something strange was going on inside my head.
"We are headed towards the north west about half an hour away from here."
"Is there a different way we can go?"
"Why?"
"That's why." -I had to keep myself in check so that I wasn't yelling from the panic. It looked as though the palace guards knew that I was gone and had decided to go looking for me. But that wasn't the worst of if. There, following just a little behind the rest was a Judge Magister. The Judge Magister Kevin. His face was hidden behind that helmet of his but I knew that he was looking for me.
"What is wrong with them?"
"That man in the full suit of armor following the rest."
"What about him?"
"Let's just say that if he finds me I will not be able to tell you what I know."
"Then let's play a little game. We are going to out smart this hound." -the determination in her voice could not be mistaken. She was going to help me avoid going back to the palace.
And so the Chase begins.
Introducing the twins, Fayla and Lyrica. Which one is the good twin and which one is the evil twin? The answer will be revealed later on.
I'm sorry that I haven't uploaded anything for a while, been busy with .... things....
In any case, I might have to break this chapter down more than I had planned based on my laptop's charging ability.
This turned out longer than I had expected. I really hope you guys like it.
